Fruit & Veggie Co-op

Growing numbers of Christchurch people are going hungry today through no fault of their own in a country that exports food around the world!.

This is because of very low wages, reduced work hours, unexpected earthquake costs, displacement, rapidly growing unemployment, rising food prices, escalating rents and benefit cuts.

Addington Action is organising
  • Christchurch South Fruit and Veggie Co-op (CSFVC)
  • Home vegetable gardens
  • Cooking and preserving classes
  • Harvesting tree fruit for making jams and preserves
  • Hunting parties
  • Ensuring everyone knows about the Emergency Food Grants available from WINZ

More distribution centres needed
More distribution centres are needed. Many hungry families are on waiting lists to join in Woolston, Opawa, Waltham, St Martins, Somerfield, Halswell and Islington. Contact Addington Action if you can help by providing a free venue for a few hours every Wednesday.

Recipies
DHB Community & Public Health has information sheets developed for the Vege Co-op Project, a collaboration between the Christchurch Cathedral and Community and Public Health that supports the 4 co-ops in Christchurch.

Each sheet focuses on a particular vegetable or fruit, giving tips on storage and preparation, as well as at least one low-cost recipe idea for using that vegetable or fruit. They are distributed each week in the fruit & veggie packs, They can also be downloaded in PDF format.
